The Metaphysical Meaning of Eczema - Do People Get Under Your Skin?

Sarah Yip Brisbane Psychic Eczema Baby This article is dedicated to all those with eczema (and perhaps dermatitis or psoriasis) who are looking for a holistic cure. This blog is based on experience and is not medical advice. I urge you to work with your intuition and healers to find your perfect solutions.

Do you have sensitive skin? Me too! Within weeks of birth, I had full body eczema and it’s come and gone regularly since then. Being itchy and scratchy is something
I’ve had to make peace with.

The Oxford Dictionary defines eczema as "a
medical condition in which patches of skin become rough and inflamed with blisters which cause itchy and bleeding." The term eczema comes from Latin/ Greek words, which mean to boil over, or break out. That's definitely how you feel when you have it! Did you know that Australia has one of the highest eczema rates in the world?

Sarah Yip Brisbane Psychic Eczema Deepest TruthLet’s be honest – having eczema is expensive, painful and embarrassing. I’m currently healing from a breakout under my arms. To my partner’s amusement, whenever I scratch myself, I look like a monkey (funnily, that’s my sign in Chinese Astrology).

It’s hard to focus on the serious side of psychic readings when you can barely sit still. Thank goodness I meditate and have willpower.

Eczema is a humbling reminder to stay present and ‘in your body’, that’s for sure. Like many healers, I believe that all illness has a physical and spiritual cause. There are some great books by Louise Hay and Inna Segal about this connection.

I feel that eczema arises when you’re ‘letting people get under your skin’ and trying to avoid your truth - that you're a sensitive, intuitive being.

Some questions to ask yourself when your eczema flares up:
Why are you so uncomfortable in your skin? (the location of your eczema can be telling - e.g. behind an ear if you dislike people gossiping about you, on an arm if you feel held back, or on your back if you think people are talking about you behind your back!)
Who or what is rubbing you raw?
Where are you being ir-rash-ional (irrational)? Are you letting your fears rule you? You might need help to get through them.
Why are you holding anger in, instead of letting it rocket you forwards? As they say, the secret to using anger is to ‘get angry at the right person, in the right time, in the right amount’.

Is it time to shed a layer of yourself?
Do you tend to absorb criticism instead of asserting yourself? Remember – you teach people how to treat you. When you say no to abuse, you say a big internal yes to sanity and peace.
Do you see sensitivity as a gift or curse? Where do you present a ‘thick skin’ when, deep down, you’re hurting?

Are you prone to making ‘rash’ decisions or judgements?
How often do you celebrate your inner beauty, instead of focusing on your flaws or appearance? Is it time for a inner/ outer detox?

Your eczema is a message that change is sorely needed. When you accept that your body is your friend, not an enemy, ultimate healing becomes possible.

Sarah Yip Brisbane Psychic Eczema Healing QuoteHere are 11 top tips for healing eczema, physically and spiritually:

*Identify food allergies or intolerances.
I was put on cow's milk early on. Like many Chinese, I couldn’t digest this, and developed eczema. My Dad’s words were ‘we thought you’d never get married – you looked like you had crocodile skin’. Fortunately, a nurse switched me to a non-milk formula and my skin cleared up.

For me, diet is only one part of the solution. I ate lactose and gluten throughout my 20’s, but gave them up in my 30’s. If I have lactose or gluten now, my eczema flares again. I have tried Lacteeze (enzyme tablets). They help a bit but I still feel queasy.

You may also want to look into salicylates, egg and other common food issues. When I exercise a lot, my food sensitivities improve. More bloodflow, better digestion!
*Minimise junk food – especially when it’s takeaway made by people in a hurry! You’re eating their energy, after all. I am sensitive to MSG. It gives me eczema, sore muscles and hayfever symptoms. Sugary foods also bring back my rashes within hours. Once I return to home cooking, organic fruit, vegetables and slow-pressed juices, my skin improves.

I also take UltraClean EPA/DHA Plus, a fish oil from BioCeuticals. Some people are sensitive to amines and may not be able to take fish oils. I've heard there's a Candida link to eczema, which could be related to gut and intestinal issues. Some people recommend taking probiotics or following specific diets. Everyone needs to find their own solutions.

*Deal with ‘letting go’ issues. Constipation and eczema are related, so drinking good quality water, eating regularly and making time to go to the bathroom are essential. Sitting down exacerbates constipation so consider having a chair-free day on the weekends – the more you move, the better you’ll, um, move! There are even wooden stools you can buy to help you squat while using the toilet.

I also encourage you to buy or make organic bone broths, which are soothing for upset stomachs and encourage regular bowel movements. Green smoothies in the morning also work wonders.

To add a spiritual dimension, you can chant mantras such as Kali Durge (from Dave Stringer's album Joyride), to overcome the fear of change. Chanting and deep breathing boost our energy levels and ability to move on. Kundalini yoga and listening to Snetam Kaur's music could also be helpful.

*Drink better water. If you’re sensitive enough to have eczema, you’re may know that water has a vibration (i.e. Dr Emoto's work). I’ve heard stories from parents whose intuitive children will only drink filtered water. We drink two litres of water a day and eat two kilograms of food so it is a large proportion of our energy intake.

I drink more water when I like its taste, that's why we buy water for $20-30 a week from Montville Mist (they deliver to Brisbane). I also keep the kettle filled up. In Chinese, we believe that drinking warm water preserves your Chi, or life force, especially in winter. If you keep herbal teas, lemon, lime or ginger on hand, it makes the water more interesting to drink.

I also use a humidifier when the heater is on, and installed a shower head filter that removes chlorine and fluoride. The latter has improved my skin a lot. I no longer have to moisturise as much after bathing. Read more on Water, Fluoride and Your Third Eye. Some people also associate 'hard water' with eczema and dermatitis.

*Try oil pulling. After waking up, I do oil pulling before I drink anything. You simply swish a tablespoon of extra virgin organic coconut oil around your mouth for 10-15 minutes (no longer, or you reabsorb the toxins that have been released). Oil pulling is my secret to glowing skin – it does wonders for your complexion, digestion, teeth and gums (mine no longer bleed). I sit and meditate outside while oil pulling, to make the most of the quiet time. Read more on teeth issues

My preferred brand is Banaban Coconut Oil as it tastes wonderful. It also helps the Banaban people in the Pacific islands. You can buy it from health food shops in Queensland.

*Get sunlight on your skin. Sunlight powers up our third, or solar plexus chakra. Getting 10-20 minutes of sunlight a day, especially on your stomach can improve your mood and digestion. Eczema is linked to ‘not feeling powerful’ so this is a nice self-love exercise that you can do whenever the weather allows.

*Stay warm and keep your circulation up. My eczema is worst when I’m in cold weather, around heaters or don’t move. It improves when I walk, and do morning reiki and shiatsu (a Japanese healing technique). After oil pulling, I massage myself from head to toe and send gratitude to all parts of me for working as a team. When possible, I do dry skin brushing and a homemade oatmeal honey body scrub, but not during active flare ups.

*Find the right skin care and laundry products. I cannot use certain essential oil based products, especially ones with lavender. I also avoid supermarket shampoos, soaps and handwashes. Most perfumes are also out. They give me rashes and sinus issues. Luckily, I’ve found a few products that are fine – Evohe Moisture 24/7, and the Australian Bush Flower Essences facial moisturiser (the Love System). See my psychic reading for Ian White, the founder

For body lotion, I use Vegesorb, or Hope’s Relief Moisturising Lotion and Eczema Cream. These products contain Calendula and Manuka Honey. I put a layer of the Eczema Cream on, then bandage my eczema overnight. It stops me from scratching the new skin away. I've also used pure Manuka Honey in this way.

I find that shea butter and coconut oil products are also fine. For showering, I use Hope’s Relief or goat’s milk soap. When it comes to washing my clothes, I use Eco Store products, or washing balls (which save lots of money!). If I use towels or wear clothes washed in normal detergent my skin goes red within minutes.

Note: I used to use steroid creams for my eczema but they only work for a short time, so have had to look for other solutions (hence this article).

*Identify other physical triggers. My eczema comes back if I’m around cats, especially the long-haired variety (as beautiful as they are). I also get a rash if I wear wool clothing, thermals or scarves. Bamboo or cotton clothing is fine. I reduce dust mite exposure by sunning our bedding and washing the sheets often.

*Learn to say what you mean.
Sensitive people often feel more at home in the mental or spiritual realms than here on earth. Eczema can be a sign that you feel trapped in your body – part of you wants to break out, or break off from the pain of being mortal.

I know that my eczema is linked to rage. When I feel ignored or bullied (especially by authority figures), I break out in a rash on my face and arms that disappears once I find my centre. Instead of judging myself, I laugh and tell people ‘hey I’m getting a stress rash – let’s get to the bottom of this issue instead of letting it drag on’.

To reduce my stress levels, I’ve changed my lifestyle so I have time to meditate, sleep, spend time with my partner, and stay fit. I also studied Holistic Counselling, and work with my Spirit Guides to delegate my worries.

*Forgive yourself, others, and the Universe. Embody your truth.
I believe that we come to Earth to heal an aspect of our Soul (revealed in our date of birth - find your lifepath here). Some of us, myself included, choose to be Spiritual Messengers. We come with features like ‘silk skin’ in palmistry (read more on skin types). Many of us also see 11:11 on clocks or other signs of spiritual awakening.

Your skin is the only physical barrier between you and the world. ‘Silks’ have fine, soft skin, that often shows their veins. When people touch them, they might say ‘ooh, what moisturiser do you use?!’ Silks have many lines on their palms, a healing touch and natural empathy. They are like psychic sponges. Silks can look much younger or much older than their age, depending on their lifestyle.

They're happiest when they learn to shield themselves (I clean my aura daily – it only takes a few minutes) and to choose harmonious environments with positive energy and people.

As a Silk, I feel unspoken conflict acutely, and it shows up in my skin. It’s a common feature among those who are psychic. No wonder I developed cystic acne when my parents argued a lot.

At the time, I was put on Roaccutane, which helped, but also left me with side effects – it’s not a path I would recommend. Unfortunate, my doctor at the time said ‘diet has nothing to do with acne’, and I believed him. Very few doctors learn about nutrition in detail at medical school. It’s something to be aware of.

On the topic of forgiveness – when nothing will heal your eczema physically, you need to look at childhood or past life issues.

During a recent outbreak, it seemed like none of my usual cures were working, so I booked in to see ALL my favourite healers, namely: John Le Gros (Japanese Acupuncture/ Flower Essences), Carmen Low (Kinesiology), Alison Lee (Heartwork Counselling), and Deniz Akan (Crystal, Reiki & Interdimensional Healing). Also Jo Spies who does Homoeopathy.

Here’s what happened. After the first few treatments, my eczema got worse, not better. I knew this was a good sign. If you’ve ever heard of the Herxheimer reaction, you’ll know what I mean.

I ended up releasing many painful memories related to my gender. In China, girls are often aborted or killed as they are perceived as less valuable than boys. My parents wanted a firstborn son, so from day dot, I knew I was a disappointment. Perhaps this contributed to my infant eczema. I don’t blame them for their beliefs – they were just being my spiritual teachers. It's actually a cultural issue, e.g. my family tree book (which goes back 500 years) only contains the names of male descendants.

I have been clearing this baggage for years, through The Work of Byron Katie, Family Constellations, past life regressions and self-induced trances. Having incarnated as a 29/11 Lifepath (Spiritual Messenger) to be an innovative healer, I have learned to embrace my history rather than ignore it.

They say that you teach your greatest wounding. No wonder I work with so people on honouring their Divine Feminine, intuition and inner child. The way you treat your feelings is the way you treat your women.

*Check your Personal Year. Maybe you're in a healing period?
In numerology we live in 9 year cycles. As I’m in a 9 Personal Year, I’m completing a life lesson. 2015 is an exam period for me where I’m being tested on what I’ve learned since 2006 (I launched my psychic career in 2007). Find your Personal Year here.

9 Personal Years are fantastic for rewriting history, letting go of chronic conditions, and being a mentor to others. Perhaps this is the year I stop 'opening old wounds again and again' (isn't that the story of eczema?) See my BONUS section on eczema and the eighth chakra at the bottom of the page.

The final step to healing my eczema this month was to process a past life where I had killed people. I can’t tell you how sad this made me. We've all been male, female, sinner and saint, but sometimes it's hard to own it. After that intense realisation, and a lot of crying, my itching stopped for the first time in weeks. I feel ready for the next chapter of life now.

I also saw a medical intuitive called Jean Sheehan, who said maybe I am irritated at the thought of new beginnings (my latest bout of eczema appeared when I fell pregnant). Food for thought!
Read more about my holistic fertility tips.

In conclusion, ‘if you’re going through Hell, keep going’. It's the same with eczema! Commit to eliminating the problem, or at least, making peace with your reality.

Look at where you keep your toxic feelings hidden and find a safe way to express them. What goes in, must come out. Perhaps it's time to clean up your self talk?
These days, if I feel an itch, I pause and ask ‘what’s below the surface – what is not being said?’

Please, experiment with the ideas listed here, and let me know what works for you!

After this last cycle of eczema, I’m using August's Blue Moon to ‘grow a thicker skin’. I’m studying stand up comedy, as I’d rather face my fears than let them bury me, and I encourage you to do the same.

See your body as your soulmate – after all, it’s the only one you’ve got. Beauty is more than skin deep. Love yourself no matter what you look like. Know that healing is always possible. Spirit doesn’t want us to suffer – it wants us to learn. You are a Divine Soul and deserve the very best in life. Keep growing!

Bonus Section – For the Super Duper Numerology Fans
In numerology ECZEMA adds to 5+3+8+5+4+1 = 26/8. Breaking 26/8 down gives insight into the spiritual cause of eczema, namely:

-An imbalance in the second chakra (sacral chakra), which rules our emotions and hip/ lower belly area. When our second chakra is balanced, we find relationships easy. When it’s underactive, we suppress our intuition and go numb (think of someone who never cries). When it’s overactive, we can’t stand being alone and take everything personally. This chakra is healed through conflict resolution, finding pleasure in the small things and balancing giving and receiving. Its ultimate goal is peace and going with the flow.

-An imbalance in the sixth chakra (third eye chakra), which rules our brain and vision (including our ESP, hence the term the sixth sense). When our sixth chakra is balanced, we see the good and bad in every situation, feel on purpose, and keep an open mind. When our sixth chakra is underactive, we overanalyse things, worry a lot and are sceptical of spiritual matters. We follow others rather than create our own lives. When our sixth chakra is overactive, we have headaches, nightmares or become ungrounded/ spaced out. This chakra is healed through visualisation, study, self-care and time in nature. Its goal is love for self, the planet and all life.

-Overall, ezcema is an opportunity to heal the eighth chakra (Karmic Patterns). The number 8 looks like an infinity symbol on its side and represents our connection to God/ Spirit/ Source. Issues with the 8 chakra invite us to ‘break old patterns’. When our eighth chakra is underactive, we're addicted to ‘doing the same thing, expecting different results’. We keep waiting for someone to save us. When our eighth chakra is overactive, we turn into a bully – wanting everyone to live up to our standards instead of letting them evolve at their natural pace.

When our eighth chakra is balanced, we embrace life as a series of endings and beginnings. We believe in karma (what goes around, comes around – like the figure 8) and have the strength to stand up for our convictions. We know when to push, and when to wait. We work with Spirit in a respectful way and exude gratitude.

Perhaps the blessing of eczema is to teach us to surrender to our natural sensitivity (2) and to honour our intuition (6). To break the cycle of self-doubt and to STOP letting other people dictate our lives (8). Sound good? Then let the healing begin! Love x Sarah

Thanks for such an interesting post - I've been a sufferer of eczema most of my life and can empathise with you! For the past year I've had eczema quite badly on my middle and ring finger on my right hand. It's only really begun to heal now. I have had moments of feeling my skin crawl and just wanting to rip the skin off because of the itch! it has been awful at times! I feel I'm in a transition stage of life at the moment which has seemed to influence many areas of my life and wondered if it had something to do with some self-sabotaging beliefs I've held on to and me trying hard to release these. Or perhaps it may be because I've been putting off using my hands and in turn use my creative ability... Anyway I'm so glad it's nearly healed now!

Hi Rose, really glad to hear from you, thank you for writing in. The middle finger and ring finger can be related to our values and creativity in palmistry. Glad to hear your itch is finally starting to heal. If you have a chance, maybe check out your personal year to see where you're at in your cycle: I find my itch reduces when I have an energy healing, go to yoga or even just have a good cry. It's like my eczema is my body asking me to love and respect it instead of trying to ignore its needs. Looking forward to staying in touch with you. I'm on facebook as The Numbers Queen or you can subscribe to my articles on the homepage. Best wishes, fellow creator

Wow, your article blew me away. I've been googling eczema fir a few hours now and found this article in rather an obscure way through the Eczema Diet page on Facebook. It's really resonated with me, I've suffered eczema most of my life but mostly have it under control. I'm pregnant with my third at the moment and have a lot of chaos in my life, and have bad eczema in places I've not had it before - my back, arms, face, neck - and earlobes?! Something is definitely 'getting under my skin' and I'm not sure how to deal with it, I do not like confrontation (perhaps unsurprisingly). Thanks for writing this, I will read again it's definitely given food for thought.

Hi Krystal, so glad to hear from you, and thank you for your positive feedback. I'm also pregnant with eczema and that's what drove me to write this article. A medical intuitive called Jean Sheehan mentioned to me maybe I am 'irritated at the thought of new beginnings', she could be right! Best wishes. Please stay in touch by subscribing to articles (see my homepage at or on facebook, my community page is The Numbers Queen. Good luck with everything xx

Hi Sarah ♥ thank you so much for your honestly has brought me to tears a few times...clearly resonating...I've been hearing 'change' within quite often recently (amongst other things) & reading everything here has shed some light on my eczema condition. It is usually worse for me during the winter in general...but this winter has been the hardest...every once & awhile it is on my left hand...but tolerable. My right hand is a whole other story! It has been my whole upper palm...stretching from pointer finger to pinky & inbetween fingers, climbing up all four & wrapping around to the front. I really feel as though I Am guided me to your site & grateful for any insights you may have ♥ love & light to you

Thanks for your insight to the spiritual side of eczema. I am 49 and this is my first experience with eczema. The thing i realized that they are in circles and mostly on my legs. I had a few on my back and arm but through supplements and diet changes they have relaxed. I will look up the various body parts to gain a better insight to what the eczema on my legs are trying to tell me. Thanks again for your insight.

Wow, wow, wow.... I totally resonated with this article. I am at present doing yoga and meditation on a daily basis. The last few months have been incredibly life changing for me. I have experienced severe eczema on my left hand and it is now moving up my arms.... I am fully aware that this is an energetic release that has to be acknowledged, but for the benefit of my husband, I went to a dermatologist and was given cortisone cream for treatment.... to make him happy... although this is not working, I continue for his benefit, anyway....I am soooooo glad I came upon this page.... I was looking for answers through my yoga and meditation and here you popped up... thank you, thank you, thank you.... just what I needed to know regarding my chakras...thank you for this insight. This has been of tremendous help on my spiritual journey. Namaste.

Hi Sarah....what an incredible post. I've been going around in circles with this eczema on my chest, abdomen & back. I've gone the holistic route, diet name it. I know it's tied to my emotions but digging down deep enough is quite the challenge. The eczema actually cleared up completely this summer but now that October & winter is upon it ever arrive with a vengeance! I've been reduced to tears so many times with the frustration from itching & burning & needless to say....this just exacerbates it beyond belief. I've had chakra clearings name it. In reading your blog, it's quite apparent that I'm not honoring my true self in some way. Question is....what does it tell us that it's only on my chest, back & abdomen? Thanks for caring about us "itchers" out here. Peace, Love & Light to you!!!

Hi Toni, thanks so much for your feedback and support. I am just getting over another episode of eczema at the moment, which I think was due to diet and being annoyed at someone! I have been taking a homeopathic spray for allergies ((Brauer) which I think helped. I also tried to cut down on eggs. In your case, I suggest checking my Find Your Lifepath page on this website. You might find that being a healer/ healed is part of your life purpose. Your chest and back is the front and back of your heart chakra and your abdomen is your solar plexus chakra. So my guess is a need to forgive male figures in your life and to embody your leadership abilities. Don't give up on yourself, but at the same time, find peace in the process. Before enlightenment, have eczema, after enlightenment, have eczema one might say. Failing that, maybe travel in the seasons when you get the 'travelling itch' - perhaps you are meant to be mobile :) Love Sarah P.S. The other thing that could help is tepid showers instead of hot ones!

I love your post and all the ideas you present. I just see some contradictions in your post. I'm surprised that you are aware of so many things such as the energy in fastfoods because people made it in a hurry, but you still recommend something as bone broth? Which is basically a product of animal suffering no matter how organic. What kind of energy do you think animal bones carry?

Hi Susie, I really appreciate your honest feedback and it has taken me a while to process it. Partly in response to your comment I have written an article about forgiveness and past lives. Please see: I would probably have died from anorexia if I had not started eating meat again. It was also important in my journey with pregnancy and gives me a link with my Chinese culture. That is not to say I don't feel for the animals - I have an environmental science degree and have been vegan/ vegetarian at various times, as well as raising large amounts of money for animal welfare and green charities. It's just that I don't believe in blanket statements like no animal products, especially when some people with eczema seem to need them to recover their vitality. Yes we should eat less meat but even the Dalai Lama eats animals for health reasons. Wishing you a wonderful year ahead xx

Thank you for this post... I've been suffering with eczema all over my hands (not for the first time) but perhaps the longest since I was a child, since a year and a half ago. I've had to change my life and grow so much in the last four years and it's as though my body is still holding onto all the anger, grief and abuse that on other levels I've worked really hard to let go of... I've just worked out my personal year and it's 9 ... so hopefully I can find a way to let this go for 2017. I am a Reiki and Theta healer and sometimes I have felt so awkward about healing others with my own issues written all over my skin in this way - so I was so grateful to read your story - another healer suffering with it too. It's made me feel less alone and more determined that if I learn to listen to myself I can resolve what sometimes feels like a curse - though I know that on a soul level it is a blessing - a lesson in self-love, or letting go... Thank you. x
